These 2 ‘Healthy’ Trends Might Be Harming You, Say Experts

From supplements to skincare, health trends often promise fast results, glowing skin, or miracle cures.

But sometimes, what’s trending on Instagram can do more harm than good.

We asked health and wellness experts which popular “healthy” habits they’d avoid—and why.

Here are two trends that might not be as harmless as they seem:

Avoid Unregulated Supplements That Promise Quick Fixes

One trend to steer clear of is the growing use of unregulated supplements marketed as fast fixes for stress, sleep, or energy.

Many of these products lack scientific backing, third-party testing, or clear ingredient sourcing.

“People often take them hoping for quick relief, but they can trigger side effects or interact dangerously with medications,” says Aspen Noonan, CEO, Elevate Holistics.

Social media is full of anecdotal success stories, but those don’t reflect clinical safety or long-term effectiveness.

Instead of chasing quick wins, Aspen recommends building sustainable routines—sleep, diet, stress reduction, and professional support—as a more grounded path to health.

Bottom line: Always consult a licensed professional before adding new supplements. Marketing may sell miracles, but your body deserves more than guesswork.

Skip Charcoal Skincare for Sensitive or Dry Skin

Activated charcoal in skincare has had a long moment, but for many people, it’s doing more harm than good.

“It’s often way too harsh—especially for people with sensitive or dry skin,” explains Nikki Kay Chase, Owner, Era Organics. “It strips away natural oils and damages your skin barrier, which causes even more problems.”

While charcoal can work well in medical settings, it’s overkill for most skin types.

Gentler alternatives—like natural clays—can detox skin without disrupting its balance.

Bottom line: If your skin feels tight, flaky, or inflamed after using charcoal-based products, it’s time to switch. Healthy skin doesn’t need aggressive scrubbing—it needs support.

Final Thoughts

Not every trend that looks healthy is healthy.

Supplements and skincare products may be well-marketed, but that doesn’t make them safe or effective.

When in doubt, consult with experts, prioritize sustainable habits, and remember: real wellness isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about choosing what truly works for you.
