Below is a list of our recommendations for various health-related books, meal plans, biometric gear, etc.
Any of our recommendations are things that my wife and I personally use and recommend.
Calorie Tracking Tools:
MyFitnessPal
I’ve been using the FREE version of this app for calorie, weight, and fitness tracking for years. I love it!
Pretty much any food you can ever imagine is in their database, and it syncs with my biometric gear and health apps seamlessly.
Wahoo TICKR Armband
My favorite must-have piece of fitness gear to track my heart rate and ensure and track calories burned in a workout.
It wraps around your arm and accurately measures your heart rate to ensure you are hitting your correct target heart rate zone.
Ozeri Pronto Digital Food Scale
Super inexpensive and a great way to ensure proper calorie tracking.
While MyFitnessPal and other calorie trackers have many things pre-input you still will likely under-estimate your caloric intake if you don’t use a scale. Worth it!
Meals Delivery Services:
HelloFresh
Fantastic fresh and healthy meals delivered to your door.
This helps cut down on the mental stress of meal planning and limit caloric intake – plus they taste dang good!
BlueApron
Similar to HelloFresh, but with I think a bit more flavorful and unique options.
We’ve used both services and alternate between the two of them!
Home Chef
Another great healthy option.
They also offer easy oven-ready and express meal kits that cook up in 15 minutes.
I think this is another solid contender.
Fitness Apps:
MyFitnessPal
I’ve been using the FREE version of this app for calorie, weight, and fitness tracking for years. I love it!
Pretty much any food you can ever imagine is in their database, and it syncs with my biometric gear and health apps seamlessly
Wahoo
About a year ago, I decided it was time to take my health and fitness a bit more seriously.
But I’m not a fan of watches, so instead of using an Apple Watch, I went for the Wahoo TICKR Fit Armband Heart Rate Monitor.
Then I downloaded this app and have been loving it. It works with any type of workout from a hike to a bike ride. Highly recommend!
AllTrails
When it comes to hiking apps, this is the best of the best.
While I usually will still utilize the Wahoo app for tracking all of my workouts,
AllTrails can do that too, but better yet provides pinpoint accuracy when out on the trails.
It also helps you to find the best trails in your area via user recommendations, ratings, and photos.
Books:
Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD
If you want to live longer, this is by far and away the most important book you’ll ever read.
It is a bit thick on the science but walks through the real threats that we all face as we age from cardiovascular disease to diabetes and from dementia to cancer.
Highly recommend!
The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman by Tim Ferriss
I read this book when it first came out over 14 years ago and as always learned more than I’d ever need to know about health and fitness.
But the key takeaway for me was calorie tracking and that has stuck with me ever since using apps like MyFitnessPal.
Training Gear:
Wahoo TICKR Armband
My favorite must-have piece of fitness gear to track my heart rate and make sure that I am properly doing my zone 2 training (see target heart rates).
It wraps around your arm and accurately measures your pulse.
Yes4All Adjustable Ruck Plates
New for me this year, I’ve started Rucking after reading Outlive (mentioned above).
These plates fit seamlessly into my rucksack and help to give me a better workout on and off the trail.
GoRuck Training Rucksack Rucker 4.0
This pairs nicely with the adjustable ruck plates, but comes with elevated ruck plate pockets and ergonomic lumbar support.
I bought a cheaper Rucksack off Amazon and it was terrible. This is well worth the money if you get into trucking.
Gyms:
Orange Theory Fitness
While I am the type of person who enjoys training outside solo, my wife on the other hand enjoys going to a gym, and her go-to is Orange Theory.
With nationwide locations, you can find one near you for HIIT style professional trained classes.
Greens:
Clean Simple Eats Peachy Greens
Do you eat enough greens? I know I don’t!
This is a simple and easy way to increase your veggie intake and get vital nutrients you probably aren’t eating.
We’ve tried them all, but this is the only greens drink that actually tastes good!
Well, these are just a few of our favorites and we’ll continue adding products, books, and services that we discover, test, and continue to utilize on a daily basis.
